Drink-driving becomes a moneyspinner

The Herald Scotland -- A new kind of biofuel, produced from the by-products of whisky and beer, could create a £55 million ($86.9 USD) market in Scotland alone, its creators have claimed.

Celtic Renewables Ltd, a spin-out of Edinburgh's Napier University, is pioneering the commercial production of biobutanol, a high-value "clean" fuel capable of directly replacing petrol. The process, which was pioneered by Professor Martin Tangney, director of Napier's biofuel research centre, can also produce valuable acetone, ethenol and animal feed.

Mark Simmers, chief executive of Celtic, said that the product offered huge environmental benefits as well as a new source of revenue for distillers from material previously fit only for low-grade animal feed.

Butanol is almost as good as gasoline. Come on, let's learn some chemistry.

Here we go again. More maybe's, could's, if's. To top it all off Ethanol is trash that does not do what gasoline does and causes more pollution doing it. So keep on feeding the dregs to the live stock.

I hate articles like this ... that blabber on about stuff on the periphery but never get to the heart of the matter: What exactly are they using to produce the fuel? How much fuel could possibly be produced using this technique. That is to say, is this significant or just a curiosity?

Guess it's easiest just to rewrite press releases.

I don't know, but I think a gallon of beer is more expensive than a gallon of gas. How much is a 12 pack of beer? Maybe less than $10?
